FORD TYPE 9 GEARBOX OPTIONS


FIRST GEAR RATIO CHANGE


A frequent criticism is the first gear with a ratio of 3.65:1, useful to do a steep hill start with a loaded up car, but not much use to get the best acceleration from 1st to 2nd gear due to the large difference in the ratio between 1st and 2nd gears. We can modify a gearbox to have a more useful 2.98:1 1st gear to improve the acceleration of the car.

LAYGEAR FRONT BEARING CONVERSION

A car with an increased performance engine puts extra load onto the inadequate needle rollers on the front of the layshaft and failure is quite common. We can discard the needle rollers and modify the laygear to take a large purpose made roller bearing that has a much higher load capacity.

OPTIMUM GEAR RATIO SET

For a car with a high output engine, used on the road or on trackdays, we can change all the gears to optimise the car's performance.

The ratios are - 1st 2.48 - 2nd 1.61 - 3rd 1.23 - 4th 1.00 - 5th .82


The gear teeth are helical cut like the original teeth to give quiet running, also the heavily loaded 1st and 2nd gears run on needle roller bearings to reduce friction.

Also, the front of the laygear is made to take a purpose made roller bearing that has a much higher load capacity.

ALUMINIUM GEARCASE

If a reduction in the weight of the gearbox is required, we can rebuild it with an aluminium gearcase, saving 3.7kg (8.15lbs).

An aluminium cover located on pins can be fitted to improve the rigidity of the gearcase.

INTERNAL CLUTCH RELEASE MECHANISM

To improve the operation of the clutch the standard pivoting fork and sliding release bearing can be discarded and replaced with an internal hydraulic release mechanism. This replaces the standard front cover on the gearbox and provides a direct acting and positive clutch operation.

Each mechanism is made to requirements to suit the particular flywheel and clutch combination. Hydraulic fittings for the release cylinder and a bleed valve are supplied. Hydraulic lines can be made to customers' requirements.

ALUMINIUM BELLHOUSING

A substantial saving in weight can be made by fitting an aluminium bellhousing. We can supply a suitable bellhousing to enable a T9 gearbox to be fitted to any of the popular Ford engines.
